Frequently Asked Questions About Head Lice At School

Are the kids catching head lice from items in the classroom?
Many parents and teachers express concern that library pillows, shared cubbies, etc. are vehicles for spreading head lice.  The chance of catching head lice from sources in the environment is actually very low.  Head lice are adapted to live on heads, and to cling to hair.  They do not frequently fall off.  Furthermore, lice die after about 24 hours without a food source, so even if lice are loose in the classroom on Friday afternoon, come Monday morning, they will no longer be a cause for concern. 

How are the kids catching head lice?
The major source of transmission is hair to hair contact between children as they are playing together in the school yard, or sharing a book in the library.  Therefore the very best protection against catching head lice is to have short hair, or to wear long hair in a bun or braids.  See our Resources page for more about this.
